[watching] What have you seen recently?

Watched The Maltese Falcon for the first time in ages. Good stuff, although I suspect that I was a little tired for that level of double-crossing. Casablanca next, I think.
Run a pop up cinema once a month and showed Casablanca a couple of months ago. Hadn't seen it before and found it surprisingly enjoyable. Last night showed The Incredibles which I also hadn't seen before, superb!

Ok, I know I'm a little behind most, but I finally watched The Last Jedi tonight. Confession time, I can take or leave Star Wars. Or in the case of the prequels, I can certainly leave Star Wars, but this, like the first of the new sequels, I thought was great fun.

.... I'm trying to convince the missus on that one. So I'll chuck your recommendation at her
Currently watching the Bodyguard on BBC and currently marvelling how apart from the main character the majority of the cast is female, which is odd for a cop thriller :/

Don't marvel. Just enjoy. (Though I am a bit disappointed that all of the female characters are so conventionally attractive. I'm not, sure the central relationship would work so well if the Home Secretary looked like Teresa May.)

I'm currently halfway through the new series of Iron Fist and the women are massively out shining the men. Bring on Knight-Wing Investigations! Today. Now. I want it now.

I'm still smarting from the fact that they backtracked so egregiously in Star Trek Discovery. The pilot was fronted, and held, together by two non-White females and was all the better for it.

Gina McKee's anti-terrorist chief is by far the best thing in it. I'd like to see a series about her, rather than the bloke who's regularly out-acted by the on set furniture every week.

Mythica. So very very bad it's good. Sounds like the kind of plot I come up with when I've been too busy to write anything and I wing it. Very clearly based on a d and d game.

Wanting nothing to have to concentrate on recently I watched Nazis at the Centre of the Earth on Amazon Prime. Complete hilarious balderdash in a similar vein to Iron Sky's Nazi's on the Moon. Worth a watch if you can put up with the drama school student acting as the special effects are better than say BBC 70's scifi series by a long way. The plot involves a scientific mission in Antarctica finding access to a Hollow Earth location where Nazi's have set up a base - you can easily imagine the rest and the plot features the use of overt telegraphy with subtle foreshadowing never evident.

I Kill Giants

Girl thinks she is a giant killer. Turns out its externalised grief. Or is it?

If you clear away all of the Bridge to Terabithia bullshit from it and take it just as it purports to be (Girl called Thorson is a giant killer who carries a massive blasted warhammer of doom in her clutch bag) it makes an amazing hook for a Chosen in Monsterhearts.

Actually, you can leave in the 'Are the monsters real, or are they just a figment of her imagination being realised to externalise her pain' stuff and that would work too, with the right group.

Star Trek Discovery

Recently watched it again, all the way through, without the STUPID season breaks and nonsense like that. Also watching Enterprise at the same time. There is simply no comparison - ST:Disco is simply a superb version of Trek. It may well have converted by daughter into a Trekkie!

Despite the success of season one, season two of Discovery will go back to it's traditional Trek roots. In other words, handful of fans complained that it was too dark and not Star Trek, and sadly CBS has listened to them. So expect things to be changed and retconned in season two. I just hope they can keep up the momentum.

Robot Overlords 🤖
I watched this thinking it would be a tacky low budget movie that might be okay to mine for ideas for my games.
To my surprise it is really very good.
Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson star in it but it is about how the kids solve the mystery. The special effects are good, though could be better but the robots look fairly cool.
Worth a watch.

Not a “watch” but the new series of Dan Dare on Radio 4 Extra - and BBC Radio iplayer. I listen because of the dearth of new Space Opera. Little unhappy with the modern makeover at first - the three main characters being too competitive with each other and the solution to the first story was unsatisfying - but it’s getting better. Good production values. However I listen to it through an RPG lens. Each adventure is basically a single RPG session with the sort of storylines and resolutions typical of them. Perfectly acceptable games but nothing special. Nice to have in system SciFi with aliens on the planets again though!
