Here you go then, the follow up to Inferno, only available in novel form, and no Doctor at all! Main character is the Master who, currently under UNIT lock and key, has to help out with the Doctor being absent. Companions are Barbara and Ian, I kid you not!

The Master seems to help out at least a quarter of the time he turns up.
The relationship has been ambiguous ever since he rolled up.

That's what makes their relationship so compelling, and similarly in a strange way Davros and the Doctor. They hate each other and yet rely on each other so much are their lives interwoven and reliant on the other to have become and be who they are. It's never a case of black or white. I'd love to get that sort of relationship with between PCs and the 'Big Bad' in the games I run, but can never get that level of subtlety.

I see that they are about to release series 12 of Dr.Who remastered on Blu-ray.
That's the first Tom Baker season.

Ah, Inferno! Is that the one where they needed a couple of extra episodes so the script editor simply padded out an uninspiring story by telling it twice in two different parallel universes? I love future/past/parallel universe stories in my SciFi!

My Top Ten Classic Who stories:
Okay. I'll bite and have a go at a personal Top 10.
  1. Robots of Death ("Please do not throw hands at me".)
  2. The Caves of Androzani
  3. Talons of Weng Chiang
  4. Inferno (A seriously under-rated story)
  5. Kinda
  6. Black Orchid
  7. The Seeds of Doom
  8. Deadly Assassin
  9. Vengeance On Varos
  10. The Edge of Destruction (and it wouldn't be nearly as good if Hartnell didn't fluff his lines so brilliantly)

Notables (if only there was space in a top 10):
  • The War Games
  • The Mind Robber
  • The Time Warrior
  • Genesis of the Daleks
  • Image of the Fendahl
  • City of Death
  • The Creature from the Pit (Before anyone argues and says is terrible - it's fantastic. A planet originally named after female anatomy, leather-clad whip-bearing guards, a creature called Erato, and Tom Baker's attempts to communicate by blowing on Erato protuberance - which causes him to spray his message on the wall.. I'd call it closet smut, but it really isn't that well hidden. Its a miracle this aired before the watershed and its hilarious throughout. Not quite top 10 material though.)
  • Ghostlight

No. Its one of the best stories of the Pertwee era, and clearly not uninspired. In fact the only other Pertwee stories which come close are: The Mind of Evil, The Dæmons, The Time Warrior & The Green Death

What I meant was that - as I understand it - they had a fairly “stock” Dr Who storyline. There’s a mine. Something comes out of the mine and infects people. A four parter I think. It was THAT proposed story I referred to as “uninspired”.

But for some reason they were short a couple of episodes of the series. So someone had the brilliant idea of adding a couple of episodes by bringing in the parallel world plot. Same actors, same sets just a bit of make-up and costume work. It’s this addition of episodes I call “padding out”.

It’s just happenstance that changes to the story forced upon the producers by circumstance turned what would have been a “meh” story into such a memorable adventure. The final product is far from uninspiring.
