Emails

I'm aware that we continue to have some issues with emails either not arriving or arriving late. Insofar as I've been able to investigate these, there would appear to be varying causes. Sometimes it appears that our hosting provider's mail server struggled to make a connection to another server, and took several attempts before it was able to successfully send the mail. Some emails also seem to get flagged as spam by certain email providers, and so either don't get delivered or go straight into spam folders. The reasons for this are difficult to establish, since for obvious reasons, companies don't like to tell you why a given mail did or didn't get flagged as spam. I suspect some of them are caused by the fact that our emails originate from a different domain name to the one in the From address, but that is largely guesswork.

Email is something of a dark art even for otherwise technical people. The volumes of traffic involved and the fact that the issue may not be visible to the sending server make it difficult for tech support to resolve. I'm going to keep monitoring this and see if I can see a pattern, or find something sufficiently consistent that I can make it into a support ticket.

If you get fed up, you can always turn off email alerts via your account settings. If people feel that email alerts serve no purpose and we should just turn the whole system off, I'm prepared to consider that as well.

One final thing, I've had a couple of bounceback emails recently caused by people being signed up to the site with invalid email addresses. I'd be grateful if everyone would check their account and make sure that their address is a valid one. Invalid email addresses just generate extra error messages and confuse the issue further.

I have emails turned off but every now and again I get several emails (mostly from the Saying Hello thread) that turn up several days or weeks later.

Switching off notifications in your profile stops emails from any new content. For existing threads, you need to go to "Watched" in the menu bar and select "Watched Threads". That page has a drop-down at the top left labelled "Manage watched threads", and if you click on that you'll get an option "Disable email notification". That should remove any residual email notifications.

Just to give an update on this issue. We have an ongoing support ticket open with our hosting provider on this. It appears that different mail servers react differently to email from the Tavern. In some cases mail is delivered successfully, in others it is flagged as spam, and in others delivery fails or is delayed. It seems most likely that there is something about our mail system configuration which has different effects depending on how the receiving systems are configured. Which makes diagnosing the issue that much more difficult.

I've created a test script to verify these findings and get exactly the same result from my test code as I do from using the forum mailer. This script is now with our hosting company to use for their tests, and I'll post another update when I get feedback from them.

In case it’s useful data, I just received a new post in a subscribed thread notification email immediately, which I think is the first time that’s happened! Might be luck, might be something that’s been changed has worked?
