reEnlightenment
A Tripod (Wordplay 2) scenario.
5 Players, Slot 4

The people celebrate the Founder's wisdom and beneficence In bringing them to the colony of Utopia each year with a festival of lights and music magnificently organised by the Ministry of Enlightenment each year. Whilst the colony celebrates, the dedicated Servants, Techs and Proles of the Ministry of Environment participate with the Gap ceremony, where the colony's fusion reactor is damped, blessed, and then relit using the annual crop of Helium 3. As the crop descends from the Orbital Station, panic rings out when the Chief Tech is found dead, her deputy is missing and the Junior Minister responsible for the Reactor cannot be reached. A crack team from the Ministry of Consequences is assigned to resolve the issue before it has to be brought to the attention of the ever-watchful Director lest the colony be plunged into eternal cold and darkness.

Dom, today's trailer of Denis Villeneuve's cinematic retelling of a classic has prompted me to change my first offering at Furnace to Dune.

SCENARIO NAME: Desertfall and the Mind Killer
SYSTEM: Dune Adventures in the Imperium
SYNOPSIS: Outwards from Caladan, the scions and retainers of House Atreides are sent to make early planetfall on Arrakis. Your mission, as loyal expendable subjects of the Atreides, is to scout ahead and lay the groundwork for a successful takeover of spice mining operations from House Harkonen. However, rumours abound that this desert land is one full of deceit and desperation. We also know that fear is the mind killer. but if you carry out your duties with diligent expertise, you will surely succeed.

If you jlike rules light games, you will love the games mechanics.

For example, instead of those high level slug fests of D&D, with the Dune 2d20 variant rules, you only have the d20 dice and instead of attributes of individual characters, you have something called Beliefs and tools called Assets, that allows you to quickly resolve those sort of mass battles or political machinations with just one or two rolls, at worst three, sort of like a well crafted montage built upon those few dice rolls.

We are closing game preferences on Friday eve. Over this coming weekend the cold logic of the allocation matrix will be applied to create our schedule.

It's all magic and fairy dust to me.

Get your selections in then, and see you all on the other side! 😄

Red Dwarf: The Boys from the Dwarf
Fate Accelerated Edition
Time: Slot 3 - Sunday 11th October at 10:00

"Three million years from Earth, the mining ship Red Dwarf. Its crew: Dave Lister, the last human being alive; Arnold Rimmer, a hologram of his dead bunkmate; a creature who evolved from the ship's cat; and one slightly burnt out Mechanoid answering to the name Kryten. Message ends."

Three million years into deep space and the Red Dwarf crew pick up a distress call from an unknown origin. Through the thick haze of the static a familiar face emerges. The message is from Arnold Rimmer with a stark warning of Red Dwarf’s imminent destruction and the demise of his three crew mates. The time stamp on the transmission is 24 hours into the future. Can the Boys from the Dwarf figure out what is going to happen so to avoid the impending disaster and the fate that awaits them?

Tages: TV Show, Comedy, Action, Mature Themes.

I don’t think there has been an email, but Elaine & others have posted about it on the Tavern discord - the allocation information has been added as new tabs in the google doc we used to make our requests (not sure whether i should repost the link here or not, but i can go ask on discord if that would help?)

So far it has been communicated on the Discord and Facebook groups.

It's good to see that the email distribution list is a primary and useful means to get communications out to attendees. I'll send an email on the outcome and the opportunity to fill spaces that remain for games. There are still a fair number of good games with spaces, which hopefully means that we have a good balance between games offered and people that want to play.

Furnace is supporting Dementia UK this year as part of their 'Raise your Game' initiative. Play games, have fun, support Dementia UK. We would like to encourage all our attendees to consider contributing, as a minimum, what would have been their convention registration fee to this great charity. Even if you are not joining us this year, please join us in giving if you can.

Here is our just giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/furnace-convention

Dementia UK provides specialist dementia support for families through their Admiral Nurses. When things get challenging, their nurses work alongside families, giving them the support and practical solutions they need to face dementia with more confidence.

Thanks for your support.
