Mongoose Traveller: Darrians, bloody great job from Pete Nash. They ARE my Vulcans now.

Mongoose Traveller Vargr, not quite as good as above, I think they should have explored the nature of senses more given their poor eyesight and something about sex, but also a great read and development from what went before.

Mongoose RQII Vikings: again Pete and a relaxed, calm and excellent guide to Norse games with RQII..

For me the "hook" that always remains was the detail and complexity when compared to the AD&D I was playing at the time, even the stuff in the RQ2 book just blew the socks off AD&D.

I can also sympathise entirely with Dom about the scale, complexity and scope of official material for both Glorantha and the OTU. It could be in my nature, but if something is "official" well, then it's official, and if I have any aspirations to publication that can be somewhat trying. (Yeah, publication, dream on Dr Moose!)

In the last couple of months and since getting The One Ring, I've re read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I have to say that I had forgotten many little things and that my memory was tainted by the films which take some liberties.

All in all, it reads quite well, and for its size, easier for me than trying to read Game of Thrones. For some reason I do find it tedious to get into and too wordy.

I even enjoyed the riddle that is Tom Bombadil.

Over christmas, I read 'El Puente de los Asesinos' (The assassins Bridge) by Arturo Perez Reverte. The latest book in the Captain Alatriste series. Its more Alt history than anything. It is set in Venice in 1627 or 8 and it is supposed to be a Spanish backed coup that never 'oficially' happened. Quite entertaining although the books starts at the end and then tells you hoq they got there. In that respect, it lost some tension, as I already knew who would live and die.

I'm mentioning it due to the rpg connection, and my hope that for 2014 Continuum, I can run both my tranlations of the Capt Alatriste Rpg and Aquelarre (Medieval demonic spain) rpg.

How would someone adjucate the situation where a piece of equipment 'advances'. Say, a magic sword (+3d) turns out (the player, the table, or the Navigator wants to make it more pertinent or interesting) to have special abilities (flaming, singing, etc. -- traits). Would/should you just handwave this, or should a player spend XP to switch it over? And if later this special magic sword turns out to be even specialer (the Sword of MacMcGuffin), and gain even more traits, would that change anything?

Relatedly, if a player wanted to 'update' or modify any piece of equipment's traits, any special XP spends or other game-ruley bits?

Darran, it may be that you've got your RPGnow account set up to block publishers from contacting you. Either way it's not a problem - just email me your order details and I can set you up a new code. (My email address is on p205 of the PDF in the Inspiration and Reference section.)

So far we've got a game setting, a bunch of alien races with physical descriptions and core abilities, plus their complications; I've written a couple of example scenes, and we're now wrestling with how to deal with failure*. Dan and I hope to thrash out a demo scenario during the next couple of weeks, probably lasting less than three hours but we'll see. As soon as that's ready I'll waste no time in posting on any and every forum, including this one, obviously.

*I mean failure to complete a task or pass a skill check, not what if our game turns out to be a turkey (which I of course it might well do)!
